The lost time #3 by Alvine Labana R. (Creative writing)

The Sun

It’s bizarre, my legs move on its own. I run as fast as I can to the building and set my foot in. It didn’t take long for me to find the stairs. I climbed the stairs while hoping everything is going to be okay. Something really bad will be happening if I don’t do anything now, that’s what I was thinking when climbing these stairs. Usually, I will leave them and let them face their fate, but my mind is telling me to do a move this time. I’m running, running, and running. This stairs, it feels like an endless stairs. I hope I won’t be too late to reach the rooftop. After a long-running for several minutes, finally I can reach the top of the building and found the rooftop door. I opened the door and get myself ready for the worst. Thank god, they still in the same position.
“Olivia!!! Stop right there!” I shout her name to get her attention, even though I’m not sure she remembered me.
“Come on help me!” that girl asking for help to stop Olivia’s suicidal attempt.
I reached Olivia’s hand and trying to stop her. Olivia is standing at the edge of the building. She is crying and trembling. I can see the desperation and fear through her eyes. Just now, she screaming uncontrollably but now she just cry and remain silent. How can I stop a suicidal attempt like this? One wrong move, she will fall for sure. I don’t even know her problem, there are too many possibilities. Love problems, family issues, society. Everyone has their own problems. Get involved in their problem is a pain but right now I have to persuade Olivia to stop.
“You don’t have to do this! There must be another way to settle your problem.” The girl is still convincing Olivia. “Help me, we have to save her.” She’s looking at me.
Save her? Speaking of which, did we really can save her? The times, we only have two minutes left. What is the point of saving her? We can prevent her from jumping, but what’s going to happen next? There are a million causes of death that will come to execute her, and nothing we can do about it. It’s frustrating, but again nothing we can about it. Should I just let her-
“Don’t give up!!!” That girl is shouting, but it’s not to stop Olivia. She’s shouting at me. “How can you save her, if you don’t believe in yourself?!”
            “B-but what can we-“
“Don’t think about anything else! We have to stop her from jumping in this building, do you get it? That’s our priority right now. It’s ok if you don’t believe in yourself, just believe in me!”
Until now, I have to face so many deaths alone. It’s really hurt to see myself who can’t do anything and give up so easily. This girl, she just faced a tragic death yesterday and she’s right here. Perhaps she has been through the same tragedy as me. That’s right, Hesitating won’t bring me anywhere. I’m ready for the worst.
“Olivia calm down, you have to stop this and go back to the people who love you” I’m trying to convince her once again.
“The people… who love me?” finally, she’s responding.
“Yes, when you’re trying to escape from this life, there are people who love and want you to live” She convincing Olivia as well.
            “But-”
“They must be worrying about you right now, you can’t see them anymore if you jump”
“Yes, please calm down and getaway from here”
She’s trembling with fear. We have no time left, do we have to pull her down with force? Too risky, she can easily slip and fall from here. We can’t do a risky move, but we have to do something before the times run out.
“Olivia!!!” there are several people shouting from the bottom, I think they’re Olivia’s friends.
After seeing that people, Olivia seems relieved. We have done everything we can. It looks like her friends coming right here and she loose her strength. I think she didn’t try to jump anymore. There’s only one more problem, the times are still ticking. I keep holding her and make sure she didn’t do anything stupid. What else we can do? Ten seconds left, I can’t believe this. We have come this far, but in the end is she going to die no matter what? Don’t give up! I remembered what she said to me just now. That girl is still holding Olivia’s hand. I think we share the same feeling here ‘I want to save her’. Three… two… one… Olivia is falling, but instead of falling forward she’s falling back. She’s collapsed. We caught her body and something unbelievable happened. I can’t believe my eyes.
“Her lifespan is expanding?” She said it with a look of disbelief.
What just happened? Instead of zero, Olivia’s lifespan shows me a lot of numbers. 78840, that’s the number that showed above her head. What is this? Did we just saved her life? I have tried and failed so many times. Right now, I just succeed but why? Is this because of that girl? Speaking of which, she just said that Olivia’s lifespan has been expanding. I have so many questions for her. Before I can ask anything, the rooftop door is opened. Several people come to help Olivia. There’s an old man among them, I wonder who is he? I joined the people to escort Olivia to the nearby hospital. That girl is coming too, I think we can have a long conversation after this.
An hour later, Olivia has been hospitalized since then. She’s still unconscious. Her life was saved but I have to make sure. Nothing I can do but wait for her right now. I hope she’s getting better as soon as possible. I’m in the waiting room with several people, that girl, and Olivia’s friends. I want to talk with that girl, but we can’t talk here.
“Can we talk in person?” I approached and asked her. She nodded to me silently.
She followed me to the park in the hospital. There’s nobody here. We can talk without minding other people. We’re sitting on the bench under the tree. It was so cool and comfortable here. The morning air that makes you sleepy. A perfect place for a long talk.
            “I want to ask yo-“
“Celica Chambers, nice to meet you” She smiling at me.
Ah right, where’s my ethic? The first thing should be the introduction. I’m looking for her for several days and today this is my chance to know more about her. I’m still curious about one thing. The mystery about her. Her lifespan and what she said in the rooftop.
“Eldrick Williams, let’s get to the point. What do you mean by her lifespan is expanding?” I can’t hold myself to ask about it.
“I can see someone’s times, it shows on their head. When it reaches zero, they will face their death.” She explained her power and it’s exactly the same as me.
            “Celica, can you see mine?”
She shook her head to express no. Just as I thought.
“That’s the reason why I followed you to the Game Center on that day.” Celica mentioned our first encounter, but followed? What is that mean? “I’m really surprised, that’s the first time I can’t see someone’s time. So, I decided to attract you with that dancing game.”
“You’re really good at dancing, aren’t you?”
“Yup, but I wasn’t expecting that will attract everyone as well. You’re approaching to talk to me, but I don’t know how to respond to you at that time.”
            “So that’s why-“
“Yup, that’s why I’m waiting for you in the bridge yesterday.”
This girl really loves to interrupt when someone is talking. Speaking of which, she just experiencing something terrible. She has been through tough times just like me, but she didn’t give up.
“Speaking of yesterday, you’re amazing. Even after that accident, you still believe that you can save everyone. You know, I gave up a long time ago.” I tell her about my pathetic side.
“So, that’s why you chose to leave me in the car accident.” She looks at me with a disappointing look. “You must be thinking that no matter what you do, nothing will change.”
She’s right, that’s the reason why I let so many people to face their fate. I’m so pathetic.
“You don’t have to blame yourself Eldrick, that’s a natural reaction. I know that feeling, I know it well. I think the reason why I have this power is to do at least a little to turn that ‘nothing’ into ‘something’.”
“You’re really an optimistic person eh.”
“Thanks for that optimistic. Today, instead of doing a little turn, we completely change it! We saved someone’s life” she said it with a really happy face. That pure smile just looks like a sun, The sun that will save a lot of people.
“Let’s do our best from today.” She reached out her hand to me.
There’s no doubt about it, we have saved Olivia’s life. Finally, I can use this power to save people. I can’t let someone’s death in front of my eyes anymore. There’s still a lot of mystery about this power, but one thing that I know is I can save someone’s life with her.
“I’m still worried about that girl right now. She is trembling with fear and crying, trying to kill herself. Hey, can we check on her?” Celica seems to be panicking out of the blue.
            “What’s wrong?”
“I don’t know, but I think something really bad will happen if we don’t investigate more.”
“What? Don’t say that you want to know the reason why she wants to commit suicide? Stop it, let the police do that kind of thing.”
“I know it’s not our responsibility, anyway let’s check on her first.”

I don’t know what got into her so suddenly, but I want to check Olivia’s condition in the first place. So, I decided to come and see what’s going to happen.

The Lost Time #2 by Alvine Labana R. (Creative Writing)

Encounter

The times won’t stop, it won’t wait for anyone else and it won’t come back no matter what happened. Life is really short, it’s really close to the end and what awaits us at the end of life? Of course, it’s death. Life’s deadline is decided since the day a human born. Every human has a lifespan and somehow my eyes can see it.
I can see someone’s lifespan, there’s no doubt about it. I have seen so many deaths in front of my eyes, but there’s something odd here. I can’t see that girl’s lifespan, but why? Is there something special about her? I have many thoughts about this, but I have to confirm it by myself. First, I guess I have to know her first, but that sounds difficult though. I rarely talk with people, so I don’t really know how to start. She slowly leaving the crowd, at least I have to make contact with her. I approached her without a plan. She is standing right in front of me now, but I can’t say a word.
The girl looking at me with a confused look and asking “What? What do you want?” Somehow, her tone is intimidating. There is no single word coming from my mouth. I look at her head again to make sure, but still there is no lifespan time above her head.
“If you don’t have any business with me, then bye” she just leave me and disappear in the crowd.
I made a contact, even though it’s really fast. However, I’m still losing my chance to get any information about her, but crying over a spilled milk won’t fix anything. There is no mistake about her lifespan, I can’t see it.
“Wow man, are you really trying to hit on that girl? Yeah, she’s amazing after all.” Tommy comes out from nowhere.
“It’s not like that, let’s go.”  We’re leaving the crowd, then going home.
I’m going straight to my bedroom after I arrived and hit the sack. I stretch my body in the bed, lean my head in the most comfortable position, close my eyes, and start thinking. There are so many things to think about. Still on the same question, why can’t I see that girl’s lifespan? This is the first time I can’t it. There are several possibilities. Think about it, I can see every human’s lifespan. Is that mean she’s not a human or something? Like a dead person or ghost, but there are so many people who can see her at the Game Center. There is no way she is a ghost, but she could be a dead person. She’s already dead, so she doesn’t have a lifespan anymore. Coming back to life after death doesn’t seem to make sense. Another possibility is she can hide her lifespan, but for what? I didn’t think there are many people with the same power as I exist. The same power, did she have the same power as mine? I can’t see my own lifespan in the mirror or another thing that can reflect myself. Is that how this power works?  Whatever, there’s only one way to find out.
The next day, I’m going for a walk, while hoping to bump into that girl once again. The first place that comes into my mind is the Game Center, our first meeting place. It’s my wish to meet her, but I don’t know what to do. Making a friend with her is a good option, but I have a bad feeling about this. I came to the Game Center once again. The place is crowded like the usual, a lot of people came here to having fun. I’m traveling around for several minutes, but that girl doesn’t seem to come to this place.
I decided to leave the place and looking for another place, but nothing come to my mind. On the way to go to another place, I caught a glimpse of her, she standing there in the pedestrian bridge over the road. That’s the same place that I used to wait for Tommy yesterday. How do I put it? Yesterday, she looks really enthusiastic on the dance floor, but today she looks so gloomy. It’s like this cloudy day coming from her. I can even see her sadness from her eyes. Perhaps it’s not a good day to say hi to her, but I have to know her.
“Hi!” I approached her without thinking any further and trying to be as friendly as I can. A casual conversation should do it. “You’re the girl from yesterday right? Your dance is really a thing”.
“Oh yes, e t-thanks.” Surprisingly, she answered me with a good response. Honestly, I thought I’m going to get a cold response just like yesterday.
“What are you doing up here? Waiting for someone to go to the Games Center?”
“No, I’m just-“ She caught a glimpse of something in the road over there. “Sorry, I have to go.” She left me and running to it. Her face, it’s like she saw a ghost or something. I won’t lose this chance, not this time.
I’m trying to catch up with her, but she runs really fast. She’s going through the alleyway. I’m not an athletic type, but she runs really fast for a girl. What did she running for in the first place? Exhaustion forced me to stop for a bit. I lost her shadow, but I think I knew where she goes. She’s probably going out from the alleyway and running to the main road. After a break, it’s time to running again. I followed her once again and finally catch up to her, but I can’t believe what I saw. It looks like there’s a car accident here.
“Come on! You can do it!” that girl is holding a person covered with blood right now.
That person is still breathing, but there’s only 10 seconds left for that man to live. What a tragedy. Nothing I can do with that, there’s no way a human can stop an inevitable death. Knowing someone’s death time but can do anything about it. This power is really pointless. I decided to leave and talking to that girl on another day.
I came back to my bed once again to think about what just happened. That girl runs to a car accident that just happened. Did she saw that man crossing the road or she saw a car losing its control? Think about the third possibility, is that really what happened? She has the same power just like me? I have to make sure.
The next day, I have a class in the morning, so I decided to do a patrol after class. The current patrol is not the same as before. Usually, I’m looking for a person with a short lifespan, but now I’m looking for that girl. Come to think of it, I forgot to ask for her name. This time for sure, I’m going to know her.
After the class, I’m just wandering around in the city. I’m not really sure I can find her after that accident, but let’s give it a try. It took me not long to find something. There’s a crowd over there, but I can’t see what happened there. I took my step to the crowd and found that the crowd is trying to stop someone from suicidal attempt. There’s a girl standing on the edge of a building. I knew her, she’s my classmate. That’s Olivia, she didn’t come to the class today, and maybe this is the reason why. Three minutes, she has three minutes left.
Sorry to say Olivia, but there’s nothing I can do. I thought about leaving the crowd immediately, but for god sake. Why is she doing up there?! There’s a person holding Olivia, and that’s her. The girl that I’m looking for, the person who doesn’t have lifespan time.
